Description
The Middle Passage refers to the route across the Atlantic Ocean via which enslaved African people were forcibly transported to be sold as chattel in the Americas. Along the West Coast of Africa, European enslavers traded goods — including billions of glass beads — in exchange for African people sold within the transatlantic slave system. This poster features a small selection of beads from Africa, Italy, Iran, and beyond which are a critical and underexamined part of this story.
