Staff and Bios

Jean Fernandes (she/her) is the executive assistant of GEEX.
Jean Fernandes has been involved in the glass community as a student, educator, and collaborator since 2008. She utilizes glass to explore materiality, cross-cultural awareness, and her sociocultural adjustment as a first-generation immigrant.
Jean earned her BA in Design Studies in 2010 at San Jose State University, and her MFA in Glass in 2014 at the University of Texas at Arlington. She currently teaches courses in the Glass Department at the University of Texas at Arlington and serves as the Executive Assistant of GEEX.

Emily Leach (she/her) is the assistant director of GEEX.
Leach has worked as both a glass student and educator since 2017. Her creative practice and research focuses on blackness, bodies, (re)production, growth and language. Leach studies glass to consider the philosophies and strategies of optics and preservation.
Leach earned a BFA in 2019 with concentrations in Glass and Sculpture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also attended Swarthmore College, where she concentrated in studio art and film & media studies. She serves as the Assistant Director of GEEX and co-produces GEEX Talks.

Helen Lee (she/they) is the director of GEEX.
Lee is an artist, designer, and educator who uses glass to think about language. In her practice, Lee reifies her bilingual experience as a second generation Chinese-American in a material that similarly embodies a state of flux.
Lee received an MFA in Glass from RISD in 2006 and a BSAD in Architecture from MIT in 2000. She is a 2024 USA Artists Fellow and an Associate Professor and Head of the Glass Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ben Orozco (he/him) is the graphic designer and web manager for GEEX.
Ben Orozco is a Colombian-American artist and designer who has worked with neon and glass since 2016. He plays with spatial dimension, optical perception, and his environment across sculpture, illustration, and site-specific installations.
Ben has studied and taught neon nationally and internationally, completing a Fulbright research fellowship in Boda glasbruk, Sweden in 2020. He received his BFA at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2019 with concentrations in Glass/Graphic Design/Sculpture, and is based in Madison, WI.
